Jersey's best and brightest stand to lose: "Fearing a backlash, the presidents at Rutgers University and the College of New Jersey vowed yesterday to cover the full OSRP scholarships for incoming freshmen for at least a year. Other local colleges are considering doing the same while they lobby the state Legislature to save the program.

'The students and their parents deserve to have their commitments honored,' Rutgers President Richard McCormick said during an editorial board meeting at The Star-Ledger yesterday."

States enjoy surpluses as Garden State prepares for cuts, taxes -- Newsday.com: "As most states find themselves awash in millions of dollars in surplus tax revenue, New Jersey is among only 10 states across the country facing a projected budget deficit for the next year. It's also among only six states projected to have budget deficits for the next three years.

So, while most states invest in higher education, transportation, health care, public employee pension obligations and debt reduction, New Jersey is struggling with a $4.5 billion projected budget shortfall."

Ramapo receives $2.5 million

North Jersey Media Group providing local news, sports & classifieds for Northern New Jersey!: "The largest monetary gift in the history of Ramapo College of New Jersey came from two familiar faces: a Saddle River couple who have long been supporters of the school.

Philanthropists Richard and Millicent Anisfield this week donated $2.5 million to the college's business school. It will provide funding for a new business school building, an endowed deanship and endowed student scholarships and faculty fellowships."
